In our primary presidential election season every day we see candidates try to put their best face forward, accenting their strengths, covering their liabilities, and distancing themselves from past embarrassments. With each stop of the bus it seems not so much about who they are, but rather it seems to be more about who they perceive the day’s audience wants them to be. Perhaps “being real” is considered bad practice for getting votes!

Well, we are not candidates, but we can become caught up in the trap of posturing and positioning . . .trying to keep up appearances . . . trying to hide our weaknesses . . . in unspoken competition with people at school, work or with neighbors.  Making sure we look like successful parents even if behind inside the walls of our home we feel like a failure. Position and posturing eventually takes it toll in personal isolation, shallow relationships and personal discontent.

As we have studied these past weeks, Jesus didn’t position or posture and he taught about a way of living real that cultivates authentic relationships.
